Like the African tradition, the name of a dance and its music are generally the same. Funk dances, born in the 1970’s include locking, popping, ticking, and backsliding, sometimes called the “moonwalk.” As “Rerun” on the television series “What’s Happening,” Fred Berry introduced the mainstream to locking, a style originated by Don Campbell in 1970. It’s animated style, sharp angles and distinctive costumes clarify the difference between this dance and popping, with which it is often conflated. |
